The Department of Water Supply (DWS), County of Hawai‘i, is joining communities across North America in celebrating Drinking Water Week, May 4-10, 2025.
This annual observance led by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) serves to highlight the importance of healthy drinking water and recognize the tireless efforts of water professionals who keep it flowing in our communities around the clock.
“From our keiki to our kupuna, clean drinking water touches every aspect of our lives,” said Mayor Kimo Alameda. “It sustains our health, our economy, and our communities. I want to thank the Department of Water Supply and its dedicated staff for everything they do to provide safe, reliable water service to us every day.”
Drinking Water Week also reaffirms DWS’ mission to provide customers with an adequate and
continuous supply of safe drinking water in a financially responsible manner.
“Drinking Water Week helps to remind us of the crucial role that safe drinking water has in the overall well-being of our communities,” said DWS Manager-Chief Engineer Keith Okamoto. “It also offers us the opportunity to acknowledge the tireless work of water professionals who keep it flowing 24/7/365.”
During Drinking Water Week, DWS will be hosting public outreach events in Hilo and Kona to raise awareness about the importance of safe, reliable and sustainable drinking water. DWS will staff a display booth at the following times and locations:
- 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, May 5 at Aupuni Center, 101 Pauahi Street, Hilo
- 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 7 at the West Hawai‘i Civic Center, 74-5044 Ane Keohokalole Highway, Kailua-Kona
- 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, May 9 at the Hawai‘i County Building, 25 Aupuni Street, Hilo
Founded in 1949, DWS is a semi-autonomous Hawai‘i County agency governed by the Water Board. Using revenues generated from water customers, it operates and maintains 23 public water systems that together deliver 25 to 30 million gallons of safe drinking water daily to more than 125,000 people.
