Prepare for Drinking Water Needs Ahead of Approaching Storm
The Department of Water Supply (DWS), County of Hawai‘i, advises water customers and the public to prepare now for their drinking water needs ahead of an approaching storm forecast to impact Hawai‘i Island beginning tonight and continuing through the weekend.
Severe weather and high winds can disrupt electrical power and other infrastructure needed to operate DWS water systems, potentially resulting in extended interruptions to water service.
Customers are encouraged to store an emergency supply of drinking water and conserve DWS water beginning now. Tap water should be used only for essential needs, such as drinking, cooking and personal hygiene, until weather conditions improve. Conserving drinking water helps maintain adequate storage in DWS tanks for essential needs and emergency fire protection.
Customers, particularly those who depend on a continuous supply of DWS water, are encouraged to review their individual needs and prepare accordingly. Information on how to safely store drinking water is available in DWS’ Water Emergency Preparedness guide that can be found under the “Community” menu on the Department’s website at www.hawaiidws.org.
DWS will continue to monitor conditions and impacts to its water systems. If warranted, DWS and/or the Hawai‘i County Civil Defense Agency will issue additional messages regarding weather conditions and potential impacts to DWS customers.
